What Actually Causes a Boiler to Ignite?

Electrodes are one of the most important parts of the whole system. Without them, your boiler simply cannot ignite or operate safely. A boiler does not just turn on by itself.

It follows a precise safety sequence:

  1. The boiler receives a signal that heat or hot water is needed
  2. The fan draws air into the combustion chamber
  3. Gas enters the burner
  4. The spark electrode ignites the gas
  5. The flame electrode checks that the fire is actually burning

Only once all of this is confirmed will the boiler stay running.

What Do the Two Electrodes Actually Do?

Your boiler normally has two electrodes working together:

1. Ignition Electrode (Spark Electrode)

This part creates the spark that lights the gas.
It works very similar to a spark plug in a car.

2. Flame Sensing Electrode

Once the boiler lights, this electrode checks that the flame is actually present.

  • The flame is stable
  • It is safe to keep supplying gas
