Why does my Boiler Pressure go high to 3 Bar (Red Zone) and then drop?

  4. Cycle of high and low pressure: Once you top up the pressure and run the boiler, it rises to 3 bar and drops and this cycle repeats. If so, this means you have a faulty expansion vessel with a working PRV

Causes of a Faulty Expansion Vessel

  • Rubber Membrane Failure: Inside the expansion vessel, there’s a diaphragm that separates water from air. If it becomes damaged or worn out, it can no longer perform its function which is to absorb excess pressure. When the diaphragm has a hole in it, the expansion vessel will be filled with water rather than air. The vessel should be light and not have any water in it, so that it can absorb the excess pressure.
  • Blockage in the Connection Pipe: Sometimes, debris or sludge can clog the connection between the expansion vessel and the system, preventing proper pressure regulation.

How to Fix the Problem

If you suspect a faulty expansion vessel, it’s important to address the issue promptly to prevent further damage to your heating system. Here’s what you can do:

  1. Check the Expansion Vessel Pressure – A qualified heating engineer can check if the vessel’s air pressure is correct and recharge it if necessary.
